SYND ORGANIZES A PLASTIC RECOVERY CHALLENGE WITH CHILDREN OF WISDOM WAYS ACADEMY AS PART OF ITS CHILDREN FOR CLIMATE (C4C) ACTION CAMPAIGN

As part of fighting plastic waste from our environment, the Strategic Youth Network for Development (SYND) has organized the Plastic Recovery Challenge through its “Children for Climate (C4C) Action” campaign flagship program.

The challenge dubbed Plastic Waste is a Resource”sought to demonstrate among children that plasticwastes can be reused through innovative means.

Present at the contest, the Executive Coordinator of SYND, Chibeze Ezekiel said if young ones adopt the attitude of recycling plastics, it will help reduce waste significantly and protect the environment from plastic pollution.

The contest involved 4 groups of 4 children per group. The 4 teams were Team Faith, Recycling, Galaxy, and Artifact.

The contesting groups had a time period of 1 hour and 30mins to generate items from the plastic bottles presented to them. Some of the innovative items produced by the teams were pencil cases, mini purses, flowerpots, funnels, soap dishes, toilet paper holders, and phone holders.

At the end of the contest, Team Faith won the first position followed by Team Recycling, Team Galaxy, and Team Artifact.

Speaking to the C4C project lead, Jacob Sarfoh he said “the impact of climate change is enormous and it affects the different age groups. We have taken a step back to give training and knowledge to children so that in the next 10 to 20 years, the environment will be protected by the future generation. Take a look at the IPCC report, it’s alarming.”

According to Mr. Sarfoh, they will continue to engage the partakers of the contest, since they have gotten a first hand skill in transforming plastic waste into something useful and this can be applied in their homes.

We have promised to start engagements with Jack and Jill School at Roman Ridge and will be taking the initiative to other schools as well to partner with them.

We were joined by Kimberly Kitson-Mills (Kimberose), a music artist and songwriter who is based in France. She’s currently in Ghana with her crew to shoot a documentary that includes the environmental campaigns or advocacy work of SYND led by Chibeze. She engaged the contestants and participated in awarding the winners of the contest. ed them for the great ideas brought out as preteens using plastics and contributing to change in our environs.
